Portability vs. Stability

There’s always a balance when it comes to portable gear – the easier something folds up, the less sturdy it tends to be. Soft pads sacrifice some stability but pack ultra small, while hard pads are heavier and bulkier but keep drones steadier. 

Consider the environments you primarily want to use a landing pad in when deciding how portable it needs to be. Stability is my priority for rocky, uneven settings while I’d gladly shave weight for tossing a pad in my backpack all day.

In order for pads to do their job, they need full contact with the ground. Don’t use pads on uneven surfaces and make sure no edges or corners lift up. Weigh them down if needed.

While some pads look similar, they support vastly different drone weights. Make sure to choose one with an adequate max payload for your drone setup. Exceeding it can damage pads.

Secure It Properly
Pads shifting mid-flight completely defeats the purpose. Use ground stakes, weigh down edges with rocks, or glue on velcro strips to keep pads locked in position, especially on windy days.

Maintain Your Pads
Don’t neglect general pad maintenance - letting them air dry between uses, cleaning off stuck debris, checking for tears, etc. This preserves pad integrity for countless future flights.

If you fly at night often, pads with LED edging provide helpful visibility cues. Or if it's super windy where you fly, investing in pad anchors or an interlocking tile system creates more stability. 

DIY Landing Pads

While manufactured landing pads have durable, weatherproof designs, it is possible to create your own DIY landing zone in a pinch:

- Use a rigid, flat piece of material like finished plywood, thick plastic, foamboard, or plexiglass. Smooth any sharp edges.

- Paint the surface with textured paint or use grip tape/no-slip mats to emulate the traction of store-bought pads. 

- Weigh down the edges so they don’t lift up. Having raised sides helps too.

- Ensure your DIY pad is large enough to accommodate your drone’s full landing gear footprint.  

It might not look as sleek as folding pads, but a homemade option gets the job done on a budget!
